Johnson Memorial Hospital offers a wide variety of community health education classes and support groups. All classes are led by trained professionals, including American Red Cross certified trainers.
Classes
Weight Loss and Wellness Education Seminars
Have you been thinking about weight loss surgery but don’t know where to start? These informative seminars led by bariatric surgeon Dr. Dana Lindsay are a great place to start. Call Eileen Williams at (317) 346-3866. Click here for a complete list of seminar dates.
Cardiac Rehab
Cardiac rehabilitation is for those who have experienced CABG, MI, Stent placement, Angina or Valve Replacement. Diet, cholesterol management, weight management and exercise education provided. Monitored exercise sessions are available on M-W-F. Medicare and most insurances cover this service. This program requires a physician order. Click here to Find a Physician. Childbirth Education Class
This program prepares you and your partner for what to expect during pregnancy, labor and delivery. You will learn about the labor and birth process, positive positioning, cesarean birth, how partners can help, pain medication and relief options, relaxation and comfort measures, breastfeeding and the post-partum time. A tour of the maternity center is included. $20 for those delivering at Johnson Memorial Hospital; $50 if not delivering at JMH. Look Good, Feel Better
A two-hour class to help learn to deal with hair loss and skin changes due to chemotherapy and radiation. Make up, wig care, skin care, etc. are taught by a licensed cosmetologist. Classes at the Cancer Care Center. For schedule or to register (317) 736-3346.
Medical Terminology
The purpose of the course is to teach you the meaning of 350 Latin and Greek elements, or word parts. Your knowledge of the 350 elements in this course will enable you to interpret and understand more than 11,000 complex medical terms. Fee: $35.00. August 19 - November 18, 2010. Classes are held on Thursdays from 10-11a weekly. Registration required - registration closes 10 working days prior to class start. Contact Sally Sturgell, (317) 738-7828.
New Beginnings Breastfeeding Class
Maybe you haven't decided yet or you would just like more information. This class is for you. Learn about the functions of the breast, preparation for breastfeeding, techniques of breastfeeding, going back to work issues and problem solving techniques. Minimum enrollment: 5 persons. Pulmonary Rehab
Individually designed exercise and education for patients with lung disease to improve strength and endurance. Program meets Tuesdays and Thursdays for eight weeks at the JMH Immediate Care Center in Franklin. The rehab center is in the lower level. Safe Sitter
Safe Sitter is a medically accurate babysitting preparation program designed for boys and girls ages 11 to 13. The nationally recognized program teaches sitters how to have fun with children as well as how to recognize a medical emergency and know the appropriate action to take. You learn how to handle specific ages, prevent problem behavior, and even the business of babysitting. Fee: $30.00.

Wellness Program
The wellness program is an exercise program for individuals with cardiac risk factors who need to begin and continue with a program of exercise to improve their health and wellness. Support Groups
Weight Loss and Wellness Support Group
Have you had weight loss surgery or are you considering it? Learn more from the people who have been there. Meetings are held the fourth Wednesday of each month, except in November and December, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Suite 301, Room 303 on the third floor of the 1159 Building on the Johnson Memorial campus. The Beat Goes On
Heart disease support group for patients, family and friends. The first Wednesday of the month from 4 -5 p.m. in Suite 301, Room 303 of the 1159 Building. For more information call the Cardiovascular Care Center at (317) 736-3560.
Better Breathers Support Group
Better Breathers is a support group organized through the American Lung Association for those diagnosed with chronic lung disease, asthma or other breathing-related illnesses. Meetings are the third Wednesday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. in Suite 301, Room 302 of the 1159 Building. Family members are welcome. For more information contact Julie Menefee at (317) 346-6292.
Diabetes Support Group
Have you been diagnosed with diabetes or do you know someone who has? The diabetes support group is here to answer questions about medications, diet and exercise. Meetings are the third Tuesday of each month (except January, February and July) at 6 p.m. in the Board Room on the second floor of Johnson Memorial. I Can Cope
A support group for people and families facing cancer. Various topics discussed and speakers share expertise. Meetings are the third Thursday of each month from 5 - 7 p.m. in the Cancer Care Center. For information call (317) 736-3346.
