AskMayoExpert (AME) is a medical information database designed to provide concise, clinical information at the point of care. AME offers the medical professional quick access to information on hundreds of medical conditions. Learn more about AskMayoExpert on the Mayo Clinic Care Network Member Website.

Staff have access to AskMayoExpert behind our firewall. Physicians with a registered account can access AME when off campus and through their mobile device.

On AME you can review various features, including guidance on how to use AME as an educational tool when making patient care decisions, for example:

  • Primary care physicians can use AME as a decision aid when determining the need for specialty referral or suggested diagnostic tests.
  • Specialists can consult AME when managing a disease outside their realm of expertise.
  • Sub-specialists can use the care process models within AME to gain insight into Mayo’s approach to disease types.

AskMayoExpert also contains Mayo Clinic patient education content and provides access to review clinical research trials that are open for enrollment.

As a member of the Mayo Clinic Care Network, we have access to more than 2,500 patient education documents within AskMayoExpert (AME) and videos located on the Mayo Clinic Care Network Member Website.  

Patient Education materials can be used as a resource to improve patient knowledge and understanding, allowing them to make decisions and take responsibility for their care. Our providers can share these materials with their patients and their families to help instruct and educate them on diseases, conditions, tests, procedures, surgeries, follow-up care, medications, precautions and perioperative care along with wellness and prevention.

Through our membership in the Mayo Clinic Care Network, our specialists can request an eConsult with a Mayo Clinic specialist or subspecialist when it is believed that additional input will benefit our patient. An eConsult is an electronic, asynchronous consultation intended to foster physician collaboration and knowledge sharing. eConsults are ideal when you have a specific question that merits a specialist’s opinion but does not require the specialist to interview or examine the patient.

An Inpatient Telephone Consult is an informal telephone conversation, provider to provider, regarding the treatment of a hospitalized patient that requires semi-urgent to urgent intervention. This conversation can be used to assist you in the diagnosis or management of patient care when you believe additional input will benefit their hospitalized patient.

This interaction does not include the exchange of any medical records nor is there any documentation of the discussion in a medical record. This concierge service is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. CT and observes U.S. holidays.

The Mayo Clinic Care Network is a select group of independent health care providers, carefully vetted by Mayo Clinic and granted special access to Mayo’s knowledge, expertise and resources. Johnson Memorial Health’s membership in the network gives our doctors access to Mayo’s latest research, diagnostic, and treatment resources whenever they feel it will benefit their patients. Additionally, collaboration with Mayo Clinic helps Johnson Memorial Health achieve its mission to increase access to excellent care.

Why did Mayo Clinic choose Johnson Memorial Health to join the network?

Johnson Memorial Health passed a Mayo Clinic evaluation process that included an in-depth review of the organization, including our quality, safety, and service efforts. And, Johnson Memorial Health demonstrates a commitment to the highest quality, patient-centered care.

Is Johnson Memorial Health being purchased or could they be purchased by Mayo Clinic?

No. This agreement is not an acquisition or merger. Mayo Clinic Care Network members remain independent, community-based health care providers.

Will Mayo Clinic doctors work or provide care at Johnson Memorial Health?

No. When Johnson Memorial Health providers want clinical advice or have questions about complex patient care, they can quickly connect with Mayo Clinic specialists and consult directly with them.

What does this mean for Johnson Memorial Health and its patients?

With the ability to access Mayo Clinic’s research, diagnostic and treatment resources, we will be able treat more patients close to home, at no additional cost to the patient. Anytime we want to discuss a treatment plan or request a second opinion, we can consult directly with Mayo Clinic’s specialists. What resources are available through the Mayo Clinic Care Network?

All care providers will be able to access AskMayoExpert and patient education. Johnson Memorial Health specialists will be able to use eConsults and access Mayo Clinic eBoards. Here are more details about the resources:

  • AskMayoExpert – An online medical reference tool that offers disease management, care guidelines, treatment recommendations, patient education and reference materials for a wide variety of medical conditions.
  • eConsults – Electronic consultations with Mayo Clinic specialists when [member] doctors feel additional input will benefit their patients.
  • eBoards – Live video conferences that enable Johnson Memorial Health's medical team to virtually review and discuss complex cases with a team of Mayo Clinic specialists and doctors from Mayo Clinic Care Network member organizations.

How do Johnson Memorial Health providers and team members access Mayo Clinic’s resources? Will training be available?

Access to Mayo Clinic resources and information about their use is available on the intranet.

Does this mean patients will be referred to Mayo Clinic?

Johnson Memorial Health doctors work with Mayo Clinic specialists to share their medical expertise so that more patients can receive their care close to home, from their trusted local provider. There is no obligation to refer patients to Mayo Clinic. However, if a patient needs care that is not available close to home, a referral to Mayo Clinic can provide seamless care for the patient with the goal of returning home for follow-up care from their Johnson Memorial Health provider.

Do we tell our patients we are requesting an eConsult with Mayo Clinic?

We recommend that the doctor shares this information with the patient because the formally dictated note from Mayo Clinic becomes a part of the patient’s medical record. Additionally, the collaboration with Mayo Clinic provides patients with confidence — they have access to world-leading medical expertise through their trusted local doctor, close to home and at no additional cost.

What should Johnson Memorial Health tell patients about the Mayo Clinic Care Network?
