Peptic ulcer

Description

A sore that forms on the lining of the esophagus, stomach or small intestine.

Overview

Peptic ulcers are open sores on the lining of the esophagus, stomach or small intestine. Ulcers happen when acid in the stomach eats away at the inner surface of the digestive tract. Causes include certain bacteria and use of pain relievers.

Symptoms

Burning pain in the belly is a common symptom. It may be worse when the stomach is empty.

Treatments

Various medicines may be prescribed for treatment, depending on the cause.
