Pulmonary edema

Description

A buildup of fluid in the lungs that can be life-threatening.

Overview

Pulmonary edema is usually caused by a heart condition. Other causes include infections such as pneumonia, some medicines, chest wall injuries and high altitudes.

Symptoms

Symptoms depend on the cause of pulmonary edema. They may appear suddenly or develop over time. The main symptom is trouble breathing. This often gets worse when lying down. Cough, chest pain and fatigue are other symptoms.

Treatments

Treatment typically includes medicines and oxygen therapy. Pulmonary edema that happens suddenly needs emergency medical treatment.
