Retinoblastoma

Description

An eye cancer that begins in the inner lining of the eye, called the retina.

Overview

Retinoblastoma may occur in one or both eyes. This eye cancer begins as a growth of cells in the inside lining of the eye, called the retina. It happens most often in young children.

Symptoms

Retinoblastoma symptoms include eye redness, swelling and vision loss. Often the first sign is a white color in the center of the eye that might be seen on flash photos. The eyes may appear to be looking in different directions.

Treatments

Treatments include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and procedures to freeze or heat the cancer cells. When other treatments can't control the cancer, surgery to remove the eye might be used.
