Scurvy

Description

A condition caused by a serious lack of vitamin C in the diet.

Overview

Scurvy is caused by a serious vitamin C deficiency. Not eating enough fruits and vegetables can cause vitamin C deficiency. Scurvy is rare in the United States.

Symptoms

Symptoms may not occur for a few months after a person's dietary intake of vitamin C drops too low. Bruising, bleeding gums, weakness, fatigue and joint pain are among scurvy symptoms. Skin changes and coiled, curly hair also can develop.

Treatments

Treatment involves taking vitamin C supplements and eating citrus fruits, potatoes, broccoli and strawberries.
