Septic shock

Description

An emergency that involves a dangerous drop in blood pressure in response to an infection.

Overview

Septic shock stems from sepsis, a serious condition in which the body does not respond properly to an infection. Septic shock can damage the lungs, kidneys, liver and other organs. Serious damage can lead to death.

Symptoms

Septic shock symptoms include not being able to stand up, strong sleepiness or a hard time staying awake, and a major change in mental status such as extreme confusion.

Treatments

Septic shock treatment includes various medicines and hospital care. Surgery may be needed to remove sources of infection. Lifesaving treatments to stabilize breathing and the heart also may be needed.
