Tinea versicolor

Description

A common fungal infection that causes small, discolored patches of skin.

Overview

Tinea versicolor is caused by an overgrowth of yeast on the skin. It most often affects teens and young adults.

Symptoms

Symptoms include patches of skin that are lighter or darker than the surrounding skin, often on the trunk and shoulders. The condition isn't contagious.

Treatments

Treatments such as antifungal creams, lotions, or shampoos often help. But the skin may not return to its usual color for weeks to months.
