Vulvar cancer

Description

A cancer that begins as a growth of cells on the outer surface area of the female genitals.

Overview

Vulvar cancer is most commonly diagnosed in older women. Risks include smoking and exposure to human papillomavirus, also called HPV. An early diagnosis reduces the likelihood that extensive treatment will be needed.

Symptoms

Vulvar cancer commonly forms as a lump or sore on the vulva that often causes itching.

Treatments

Treatment usually involves surgery to remove the cancer and a small amount of surrounding healthy tissue.
