Whiplash

Description

A neck injury that can happen when the head suddenly is forced backward and then forward.

Overview

Whiplash is a common neck injury due to forceful, rapid back-and-forth movement of the neck. It's most often caused by rear-end car crashes. It also can result from sports accidents, physical abuse and other types of traumas, such as a fall.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms of whiplash are neck pain and stiffness. There also might be pain in the shoulder, upper back or arms. Other symptoms might include headaches, numbness in the arms, dizziness and tiredness.

Treatments

Treatment depends on how bad the injury is. Some people need only medicines available without a prescription and at-home care. Others may need prescription medicines, pain treatment or physical therapy. With treatment, most people with whiplash get better within a few weeks.
