Follow a heart-healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy, get regular exercise, and do not smoke. Limit or avoid alcohol. Do not use stimulants such as caffeine and illegal drugs such as cocaine or methamphetamine. Yoga or meditation may help treat a fast heartbeat due to stress or anxiety.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a healthcare professional immediately if there is:

  • Chest pain.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness or fainting.
  • Weakness.

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a healthcare professional if:

  • The heart feels like it's beating too fast.
