Self-care options include drinking fluids, using a humidifier, or taking a steamy shower. Avoiding tobacco smoke and wearing a mask when around dust, fumes, or gases may help.

When to seek immediate medical care

See a doctor immediately if:

  • After bee sting, taking medication, or eating allergy-causing food
  • Severe difficulty breathing
  • Follows choking on a small object or food
  • Asthma attack
  • Bluish skin color

When to make a doctor's appointment

Make an appointment to see a doctor if:

  • Mild wheezing
  • First time
  • Recurrent, but short-lived
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Rapid breathing
